French Riviera

The French Riviera was originally brought to fame in the early 20th century by sun-seeking European aristocrats before becoming today's symbol of year-round luxury tourism. Stretching eastwards from Saint-Tropez, this stunning coast is bordered by the flaming red cliffs of the Estérel Hills.

FREJUS (1 hr. from Toulon). Nicknamed the "Pompeii of Provence", Fréjus was formerly one of Provence's largest Roman military towns. Many Roman remains can still be seen today, in particular the arena, city wall and aqueduct. The Episcopal City, featuring a baptistery, cloister and former Episcopal palace, is well worth a visit.

SAINT RAPHAEL. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city was a favourite haunt for celebrities - including Scott Fitzgerald and Princess Elizabeth! Located right at the foot of the Estérel Hills, the town offers magnificent views over the Bay of Fréjus. The Old Port, bordered by immense plane trees, is dominated by two giant purple rocks, the "Sea Lion" and "Land Lion". The town boasts a Casino, curious Byzantine-style church, and elegant residential quarters.

CANNES (1 ¼ hrs. from Toulon). Who could visit the French Riviera without stopping off at the glamorous town of Cannes and taking a stroll along the Croisette with its palatial hotels, luxury restaurants and stunning sea views - the playground of international showbiz stars during the Film Festival.

NICE (1 ½ hrs. from Toulon). Famous for its dazzling Italian-style palaces and magnificent "Promenade des Anglais" overlooking the beautiful "Baie des Anges", Nice is the historical capital of the French Riviera.

SAINT PAUL DE VENCE (1 ½ hrs. from Toulon). An extremely select ancient fortified village nestling in the hills above Nice, home to many artists, sculptors and writers. Modern art lovers will also want to visit the adjacent "Fondation Maeght"; a temple of modern art exhibiting works by Braque, Chagall, Miro and Giacometti.

And why not round off the Riviera tour with a stop-off at Grasse - the world's perfume capital.
